What to do when you’re wondering why you’re here and the natural snow stinks or is nonexistent? Perhaps some snow nearby regionally? Blackwater, Canaan, and Timberline make snow. Gear up for an amazing free and welcome hike up parts of our unbelievable trail system and mountain glades, scenic overlooks, and shelters with wood stoves. Feed the birds out of your hand. Visit the bubbling sand spring on Freeland Road, then telemark ski, night ski, and Nordic ski on man-made snow. Grab a one-way lift ticket at Canaan and combine with a Dolly Sods ski-n-hike while you sniff out snow way up high. Fly across the land by ice skate at Canaan, sled run at Canaan or Blackwater, tube hill, snowshoe, or horseback. Head out on an adventurous waterfall hike or go animal tracking. Mountain bike in the dirt, fat tire bike on the snow indoor bike at Trail Labs. Gear up for caving, rock climbing, Davis boulder park or indoor at Trail Labs, paddling, or off roading. Hang out at the local coffee shops, visit the new Ski Museum, and go stargazing in some of the clearest of all eastern skies. Our valley is incredibly quiet and peaceful. Visit nature centers and state park facilities, explore the tourist info office, trade and demo XC gear, climb Olson Tower, enjoy a local cafe, shop in a local store, support local artist galleries.
